His Excellency Governor Augustus Jaspert announced that impending hurricane Irma poses severe threat to sister island Anegada and that plans are being made to have residents leave the island.

In a statement issued on Monday September 4th the Governor stated that as the Territory prepared to deal with Irma, concerns loom for residents of Anegada. “Considering Anegada’s topography and vulnerability to storm surge and the predicted wave heights, we are concerned about the impacts that this system may have on this island,” Governor Jaspert said.

The Governor mentioned that Government is making preparation to assist the Anegadians travel to the other islands. “We will initiate appropriate actions to support the residents.   At this point we advise residents of Anegada to consider leaving the island and to find safe shelter with family and friends.  We will be making provisions to support this move and further details will be issued.”

Meanwhile, Mr. Jaspert noted that all areas of the Territory is being prepared for the hurricane which is expected to bring strong force winds. “Irma is expected to bring strong hurricane conditions to the Territory.  However, I want to assure you that the authorities are undertaking all necessary precautions to safeguard the people of the Territory, analysing all the forecasts and are making decisions in your and the Territory’s best interest.”  

Yesterday the Governor also activated the National Emergency Operations Centre (NEOC) which will provide a central point for the coordination of response actions.
