More Thunderstorms and Rain Forecasted

The Department of Disaster Management (DDM) is alerting residents that more rain and thunderstorms are expected based on reports that were received from the Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services. This weather which is forecasted will be caused by a tropical wave being called Invest 99L.

In an announcement issued on 10th August the DDM stated that Invest 99L was located a few hundred miles north east of the Virgin Islands; and was showing slight signs of development. It was noted that this Tropical Wave is expected to become even more developed by the time it gets to the Greater Antilles.

“The system has the potential to create low level moisture across the area tonight (Thursday) and into the upcoming weekend. This may result in frequent passing showers as well as thunderstorm development,” DDM said.

Of concern is the fact that the rains expected from the forecasted Tropical Wave comes as the Territory is still in recovery and cleaning mode. In fact the DDM fears that the expected rain may make an already bad situation worse: “The Territory is still already saturated from the previous rains and any addition could potentially worsen the conditions on the ground,” the DDM warned.

Meanwhile, the Department mentioned that it will continue to monitor these weather systems and provide updates when they become available. Meanwhile the DDM advised residents to continue to monitor local media stations, the DDM’s website (bviddm.com) and Facebook at BVIDDM for regular updates.
