W/E Ferry Dock Project Still in Limbo

The proposed works for the Sopher’s Hole Jetty/ West End ferry terminal remains in limbo as Minister for Communications and Works, Hon. Mark Vanterpool noted last week that a date has still not been set for either the promised consultative meeting or the project.

During the questions and answers segment of the 12 May sitting of the House of Assembly, Leader of the Opposition and First District Representative, Hon. Andrew Fahie asked the Communications and Works Minister to tell the House of Assembly when the public meeting facility design will be held; what the proposed cost of the project is; and what is the scheduled commencement time for the project?

In response, Hon. Vanterpool stated: “Madam Speaker, the cost of the proposed project is budgeted at Three Million Dollars ($3,000,000)...no commencement date has been set, at this time.”

The project was previously brought up in the House of Assembly during the 19 December sitting in response to a question from Hon. Fahie. At that time Minister Vanterpool promised that the project will move forward with its consultation requirement within months.

In fact the Minister explained that the BVI Ports Authority was considering capital development projects at Sophers Hole, Virgin Gorda and Road Town, and he said that at that time the cost was unknown.

Additionally, Hon. Vanterpool also indicated that public consultation was scheduled for the first quarter of 2017: “Madam Speaker, I cannot give a commencement date at this time, however, I anticipate that community consultation on the projects mentioned will begin in the first quarter of 2017,” Hon. Vanterpool told the House.
